When Iron Ore was discovered in the late 1800s, it was the beginning of change in our nation's economy and the start of something amazing across the northern forests and lakes of our state. Learn how people from dozens of nationalities came together to mine iron ore: their struggles and achivements ultimately sparked the Industrial Revolution, helped win world wars, and created a political and cutural climate that sparked innovation and change within the state and beyond. Exhibits tell the story of iron mining, immigration, the development of towns and cities across the region and more. Traveling and local exhibits add flavor and dimension to the museum. A Research Center is dedicated to regional history and genealogy. Indoor and outdoor spaces host folk arts demonstrators, while a trolley brings guests to a mining ghost town overlooking a vast mine pit. Mining themed mini-golf makes the basics of mining easy to understand, while a theater offers a film about modern mining and many other opportunities to learn more about the region's history.
